Corfu

Sightseeing in Corfu

Liston, the road with the arches created by the French between 1807 and 1814, reminds of the city of Paris during the era of imperial France. The locals gather at the cafes under the arches to enjoy their coffee.

Spianada square is probably the biggest square of the Balkans (2,500 houses were demolished in 1576 for its construction) and one of the most central points together with the Palace of Saints Michael and George and the Old Fortress. On Holy Saturday night, the religious service takes place there. A visit both at the Old and the New Fortress is highly recommended, as the view of the Corfu Town is magnificent.

The temble of Saint Spiridon, one of the most important monuments of Corfu, with its gold decorated roof and of course the Saint’s relic.

The Town Hall and its Square, is another scenic place, which you’ll love to take pictures. In the beginning it was a theater (San Giacomo), but from 1902 and on it is the town’s Hall.

Achilleion, the palace of Elisabeth (also known as Sissi), Empress of Austria, was built in 1890; it is now a museum and one of the island’s best sights, with a fantastic view. Statues of the nine Muses, Shakespeare, Lord Byron and a huge statue of Achilles adorn its gardens.

The Mon Repos Park (258,000sq.m.) will make you travel to older eras. In it you will see the neoclassic mansion built in 1831 by British Commissioner Adams as a summerhouse for his Corfiot wife. Today, the park is open to the public and the villa is a museum.

Kanoni-Pontikonissi-Vlaherena Monastery, just 3km. away from Corfu Town. The small and scenic island, united to the land by an elevated strip, is Vlaherena. You may always get to Pontikonissi by boat. Up the steps and Kanoni will offer you a magical view of the landing and take off of the airplanes, as the runway of the airport is right in front of you.

Kaiser’s Observatory in Pelekas, where you may enjoy the magnificent view as well as an unforgettable sunset.
